[:en]This is not the first time that MAS is part of this kind of conferences. Back in 2014, Mario Hamuy, MAS director, showed to the attendees the main advances that astronomy will experience thanks to the new instruments installed in our country and also, he talked about the creation of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics. That same year, on the other hand, MAS Deputy Director, Dante Minniti talked about Astrobiology. But this year, Alejandro Clocchiatti talked with the assistants about our continuity in the Universe.
The auditorium was full when the lecture called “The Planet Dilemma” was carried out in the context of the fourth version of Congreso del Futuro (Congress of the Future).
In this activity, renowned researchers from the international and national field talked about the probability of human beings maintaining its existence in other confines of the Universe and the actions that we should take today to make this possible in hundreds of years to come.
Thus, the moderator of the conference, the Director of the Astrophysics Institute of Universidad Católica (IA), Gaspar Galaz, brought up the question that kicked off this debate: “Inhabiting the Universe: our evolutionary destiny?” A dilemma that the astronomer from the Universidad de Chile, María Teresa Ruiz, the outstanding British physicist Paul Davies, David W. Miller, Chief Technology Administrator of NASA and Alejandro Clocchiatti, academic of the IA and Associate Researcher of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics tried to answer from different perspectives.
MAS astronomer gave a talk entitled “We on Earth: The Long-Term Vision”, in which he exposed the need for us to change our scales to measure the time of our existence so that we can look beyond the immediate generations. “We must place ourselves on a larger time scale that allows us to project ourselves into the future as humanity,” he concluded.
Additionally, he expressed his appreciation for opportunities such as the Congress of the Future, which allows different social actors to meet and talk about the future of Chile and the world. “Any instance in which scientists, educators, humanists and professionals from different academic disciplines can interact with citizens is important. I especially appreciate this one, which is organized by the legislators, who are the citizens that are in charge of the critical task of administering our public affairs,” he said.

Ya en 2014, Mario Hamuy, Director del Instituto, presentó a los asistentes los principales avances que sufrirá la astronomía gracias a los nuevos instrumentos que se instalarán en nuestro país y además habló sobre la creación del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica. Por su parte, en esa ocasión el subdirector de MAS, Dante Minniti conversó con los asistentes sobre Astrobiología. Esta vez fue el investigador Alejandro Clocchiatti, quien conversó con los asistentes sobre nuestra continuidad en el Universo.
Con sala llena se desarrolló el pasado viernes 16 de enero el Bloque “La Encrucijada del Planeta” en el marco de la cuarta versión del Congreso del Futuro.
En la oportunidad, importantes científicos nacionales y extranjeros discutieron acerca de la posibilidad de que la humanidad pueda continuar su existencia en otros confines del Universo y las acciones que debemos tomar hoy para que eso pueda ser una realidad en cientos de años más.
Fue así como el moderador de la jornada, el Director del Instituto de Astrofísica de la Universidad Católica (IA), Gaspar Galaz, planteó la pregunta que dio inicio al debate: “Habitar el Universo: ¿nuestro destino evolutivo?”. Disyuntiva que trataron de responder desde distintas veredas la astrónoma de la Universidad de Chile, María Teresa Ruiz, el destacado físico británico Paul Davies, David W. Miller, Administrador Jefe de Tecnología de la NASA y Alejandro Clocchiatti, académico del IA e Investigador Asociado del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica.
El astrónomo del MAS dictó la charla “Nosotros en la Tierra: La visión de largo plazo” en donde planteó la necesidad de que cambiemos nuestras escalas para medir el tiempo de nuestra existencia, para que podamos mirar más allá de las generaciones inmediatas. “Debemos ubicarnos en una escala de tiempo mayor, que nos permita proyectarnos hacia el futuro como humanidad”, concluyó.
Asimismo, valoró oportunidades como el Congreso del Futuro que permiten reunir a distintos actores sociales y conversar acerca del futuro de Chile y el mundo. “Toda instancia en que los científicos, educadores, humanistas y profesionales de las distintas disciplinas académicas podamos interactuar con los ciudadanos es importante. Valoro especialmente ésta que es organizada por los legisladores, que son los ciudadanos que tienen a su cargo la crítica tarea de administrar nuestra cosa pública”, sostuvo.
