What would you do to save the planet from an asteroid collision? This and many other questions students can answer in the 2018 Asteroid Day’s short-stories contest organized by the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics and Universidad Católica’s Institute of Astrophysics
The Asteroid Day is an international event held on the anniversary of the 35-meter asteroid collision that devastated Tunguska, Russia, 110 years ago. That`s why this celebration, held every June 30, tries to raise awareness about these dangerous objects from outer space. About 190 countries all over the globe are part of this event. In Chile, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS is in charge of the organization of this event.
MAS is part of the organization for a third year in a row, along with the Institute of Astrophysics of Universidad Católica and the Planetarium of Universidad de Santiago, and this year they are all inviting one more time to elementary and high school students to participate in the Asteroid Day short-story content. These stories can be real or fiction, written in no more than 110 words and, more importantly, have to be about asteroids, its dangers, and how to avoid them.
The format of this contest is freestyle and there are two categories: Elementary school students (3rd to 8th grade) and high school students (1st to 4th grade.) The reward for the winners in both categories is an UpClose binocular by Celestron (10×50) and a planisphere, a chart that shows the position of the stars according to certain date or time, also shows some objects in the sky and constellations. All this to motivate young people to take their first steps in astronomy.
“We live in a world where everything has to be fast and now and that keeps us away from the Cosmos in the deep sense of the word. Asteroids are a friendly reminder that the Cosmos is out there and has never left. This contest invites children to connect with the Universe and focus in one of the problems that sooner or later we will have to face and deal with,” Alejandro Clocchaitti said MAS and IAUC researcher, who has been the driving force behind Asteroid Day in Chile.

¿Qué harías para salvar el planeta frente a la caída de un asteroide? Ésta y otras preguntas podrán responder los estudiantes en el concurso de relatos breves organizado por el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica y el Instituto de Astrofísica de la Universidad Católica, en el marco del Día del Asteroide 2018.
El Día del Asteroide es un evento internacional que recuerda la caída de un asteroide de unos 35 metros de diámetro en Tunguska, Rusia, hace 110 años. Esta caída provocó grandes daños por lo que la conmemoración, realizada cada 30 de junio, busca concientizar sobre el potencial peligro de estos objetos extraterrestres. Alrededor de 190 países participan de esta iniciativa, la que es coordinada en Chile por el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS.
Como parte de las actividades en el país, y por tercer año consecutivo, el MAS junto con el Instituto de Astrofísica de la Universidad Católica y la colaboración del Planetario de la Universidad de Santiago, invitan a estudiantes de enseñanza básica y media a participar del Concurso de Relatos Breves del Día de Asteroide. Estos cuentos pueden ser reales o ficiticios, no deben superar las 110 palabras y deben tratarse sobre asteroides, sus peligros, cómo evitarlos, entre otros.
El formato es libre y hay dos categorías de participación, una entre 3ro a 8vo Básico y otra entre 1ero a 4to Medio. El premio para los ganadores de ambas categorías es un binocular UpClose de Celestron (10×50) junto con un planisferio, objeto que muestra la posición aparente de las estrellas según una cierta fecha y hora, algunos objetos de cielo profundo y las constelaciones. Todo ello para incentivar a los menores a dar sus primeros pasos en la astronomía.
“Vivimos en un mundo donde la velocidad a la que nos desafían las urgencias de lo cotidiano nos mantiene alejados del cosmos en el gran sentido de la palabra. Los asteroides son una de las formas que tiene ese cosmos de recordarnos que está allí, que nunca se fue. Este concurso invita a los niños a buscar el contacto con el Universo y a enfocarse en uno de los problemas que nos presenta, un problema que tarde o temprano vamos a tener que confrontar y resolver”, comenta Alejandro Clocchiatti, investigador del MAS y del IAUC, quien es el principal impulsor del Asteroid Day en Chile.
La recepción de los cuentos para el Concurso de Relatos Breves del Día de Asteroide se realizará entre el lunes 14 de mayo a las 8 am y el viernes 8 de junio a las 5 pm. Las inscripciones se realizarán a través de la página www.astrofisicamas.cl/concursorelatos2018/ Las bases del concurso estarán alojadas en el sitio web del MAS y en la página oficial del Día del Asteroide en Chile https://asteroidday.org/chile/, donde además se detallarán las actividades que distintas instituciones nacionales organizarán para el 30 de junio, con el MAS a la cabeza, institución que fue nombrada Coordinador Regional por la organización internacional actualmente basada en Luxemburgo.[:]
