Look closer. Mercury is the first one of the rocky planets, and it is the tiniest planet in the Solar System. In spite of being the closest body to the Sun, it is not the hottest since its atmosphere can’t catch the heat and regulate its temperature. Its surface has a vast amount of craters due to the numerous impacts of asteroids and comets, most of them fell about 3.8 billion years ago. And being a planet geologically dead and without atmosphere, those scars last until date (just like the Moon).

The Caloris basin formed after the impact of a massive 100 km-diameter meteorite. It is one of the biggest basin impacts of the Solar System with 1550 km of diameter [credits NASA].
Mercury and Venus are the only two planets that occasionally we can see “in transit”, which means that passes in front of the Solar disc [credits JAXA].

Mira bien. Mercurio es el primero de los mundos rocosos y es el planeta más pequeño del Sistema Solar. A pesar de ser el cuerpo que orbita más cercano al Sol, no es el más caliente. Esto se debe a que no posee una atmósfera que regule su temperatura y atrape el calor. Su superficie se muestra altamente craterizada debido a la gran cantidad de impactos de asteroides y cometas, la mayoría de los cuales cayeron hace aproximadamente 3800 millones de años atrás. Siendo un planeta geológicamente muerto y sin atmósfera, esas cicatrices perduran hasta el día de hoy (igual que en la Luna).

La cuenca de Caloris se formó tras el impacto de un gran meteorito de unos 100 km de diámetro. Es uno de los cráteres de impacto más grandes del Sistema Solar, con 1550 km de diámetro [crédito NASA].
Mercurio y Venus son los únicos dos planetas que en ocasiones podemos ver “en tránsito”, es decir, pasando frente al disco solar [crédito JAXA].
