[:en]The evidence of a star that escaped from a black hole and the one of water vapor on the surface of an exoplanet are two of the researches, carried out by experts from the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, highlighted by the newspaper La Tercera in its article on the most relevant aspects of Chilean science in 2014.
Around twenty research projects in areas such as paleontology, biology, neurology, immunology, and geophysics were named as the best of Chilean science in 2014 in a publication of the newspaper La Tercera, which summarizes the most relevant information from the national scientific world of the year we are leaving behind.
As expected, astronomy was part of this list, which includes two pieces of research carried out by experts from the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS.
Katia Trusich, Under-Secretary of Economy, highlighted the discovery of the so-called “Luckystar”, a star that survived being “eaten” by a black hole with only minor damage. The research was carried out by an international group of astronomers, led by experts from Ohio State University and José Luis Prieto, an astronomer at the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS and professor at Universidad Diego Portales’ Astronomy Center.
Additionally, this report on the national newspaper also put in a relevant place the discovery of water vapor in a Neptune-sized exoplanet, a study that Andrés Jordán, Associate Researcher at MAS and astronomer at the Astrophysics Institute of the Catholic University, was part of.
These recognitions tell us about the relevant work being carried out by the institution, which has just completed its first year of operation. “This year we have achieved more than 70 publications in ISI journals of the highest impact in the discipline. We have been able to conduct cutting-edge research and be recognized with various awards and distinctions during 2014. This article is just another example of the work we have done, and one that drives us to continue along this path,” says Mario Hamuy, Director of MAS.

El descubrimiento de una estrella que escapó de un agujero negro y el de vapor de agua en la superficie de un exoplaneta son dos de las investigaciones, realizadas por expertos del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica, destacadas por el diario La Tercera en su recuento de lo más relevante de la ciencia chilena de 2014.
Una veintena de investigaciones en áreas como paleontología, biología, neurología, inmunología y geofísica fueron señaladas como lo mejor de la ciencia chilena en 2014 en una publicación del Diario La Tercera, en donde resume lo más relevante del mundo científico nacional del año que estamos despidiendo.
Como es de esperarse la astronomía no quedó fuera de este listado, que incluye dos investigaciones realizadas por expertos del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS.
Katia Trusich, subsecretaria de Economía, destacó el descubrimiento de la llamada “Luckystar”, una estrella que sobrevivió a ser “comida” por un agujero negro sólo con un daño menor. La investigación estuvo a cargo de un grupo internacional de astrónomos, liderados por expertos de la Universidad de Ohio State y José Luis Prieto, astrónomo del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS y académico del Núcleo de Astronomía de la Universidad Diego Portales.
Por otro lado, la publicación nacional también puso en un relevante lugar el descubrimiento de vapor de agua en un exoplaneta del tamaño de Neptuno, estudio que el que participó Andrés Jordán, Investigador Asociado del MAS y astrónomo del Instituto de Astrofísica de la Universidad Católica.
Estas menciones dan cuenta del relevante trabajo que se está realizando al alero de la institución, que acaba de cumplir su primer año de funcionamiento. “Este año hemos logrado más de 70 publicaciones en revistas ISI del más alto impacto en la disciplina. Hemos logrado realizar investigación de punta y ser reconocidos con distintos premios y distinciones durante el 2014. Este artículo es un botón de muestra más del trabajo que hemos realizado y que nos impulsa a seguir por ese camino”, señala Mario Hamuy, Director de MAS.
