[:en]“Answering the Universe’s Big Questions” is the name of the lecture that Brian Schmidt, 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, will give in Santiago, Valparaíso and Concepcion as part of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS launching ceremony, Center where he is Senior Researcher.
On March 9th, 10th and 11th, Brian Schmidt, 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate will land in Chile as a MAS guest. In this occasion, he will give four master lectures for free in Santiago, Valparaíso and Concepción.
According to Schmidt, his lecture named “Answering the Universe’s Big Questions” will go through topics like life and time in the Universe from its very first days after the explosion of the Big Bang, focusing on the big questions that the human species still have not answered yet and on the role that Chile plays, as the capital of astronomy in the world, while trying to discover the history of the Universe.
The Chilean Undersecretary of Economy, Katia Trusich, highlighted the visit of Brian Shmidt to our country and she states that “giving our support to the science of excellence is something that we must do if we want the diversification of our economy. Through the Millennium Science Initiative Program, which depends on the Ministry of Economy, we are financing science, where the basis for a more diverse, productive and less dependent on natural resources foundation in terms of economy is being created.”
Brian Schmidt’s visit, as part of MAS launching ceremony, where Dr. Mario Hamuy is its Director, is a unique opportunity to get to know his work and to understand how astrophysics can be a contribution for our economy.”
The Australian scientist will be welcomed by President Michelle Bachellet next Monday, March 9th at La Moneda. While the master lecture will take place in Santiago that same Monday at Salón de Honor of the Former National Congress at 18.00 hrs., as part of MAS Launching Ceremony, organized in collaboration by the Senate Commission “Challenges of the Future.” In this opportunity, main authorities of the Millennium Institute will be present, besides of the other local authorities like the Undersecretary of Economy and the new Millennium Science Initiative Director, Virginia Garreton. On Tuesday, March 10th, The Nobel Prize Laureate will give his talk at Universidad de Concepcion at 15:15 hrs. at the Salvador Galvez Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering (registrations at phernandezj@udec.cl). While on Wednesday, March 11th, he will give two talks: the first one will be at 11:30 hrs. at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Architecture of Universidad de Valparaíso and the second one will be at 16:30 hrs. at the Honor Hall of Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.

[:es]“Grandes Interrogantes del Universo” es el nombre de la charla que Brian Schmidt, Premio Nobel de Física 2011, dictará en Santiago, Valparaíso y Concepción en el marco del lanzamiento del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS, del que Schmidt es Investigador Senior.
El próximo 9, 10 y 11 de marzo, Brian Schmidt, Premio Nobel de Física 2011 por el descubrimiento de la expansión acelerada del Universo, estará en Chile invitado por el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS, ocasión en la que dictará cuatro conferencias magistrales gratuitas en las ciudades de Santiago, Valparaíso y Concepción.
Según comenta el investigador, su charla “Grandes Interrogantes del Universo” hará un recorrido sobre la vida y los tiempos del Universo desde su formación en el Big Bang, centrándose en las grandes interrogantes que la humanidad aún no ha podido responder y en el papel que juega Chile, como centro de la astronomía mundial, en el esfuerzo por descubrir la historia del Universo.
La Subsecretaria de Economía, Katia Trusich, valoró la visita de Brian Schmidt a nuestro país y afirmó que “apoyar la ciencia de excelencia es algo que en Chile debemos hacer si queremos diversificar nuestra economía. A través del Programa Iniciativa Científica Milenio, que depende del Ministerio de Economía, estamos financiando la ciencia sobre la que se construyen las bases para una matriz productiva más diversificada y menos dependiente de recursos naturales.
La visita Brian Schmidt, en el marco del lanzamiento del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica que dirige el Dr. Mario Hamuy, es una oportunidad para conocer su labor y para entender cómo desde la astrofísica podemos aportar al desarrollo económico”.
El astrofísico australiano será recibido por la Presidenta de la República el lunes 9 de marzo a las 15.30 horas en La Moneda. En tanto, la charla magistral se realizará en Santiago, ese mismo lunes, en el marco de la ceremonia de lanzamiento del MAS, organizada en colaboración con la Comisión Desafíos del Futuro del Senado, en el Salón de Honor del Ex Congreso Nacional a las 18:00 horas. En la oportunidad, estarán presentes las principales autoridades del Instituto Milenio, además de otras autoridades nacionales como la Subsecretaria de Economía, y la nueva Directora de la Iniciativa Científica Milenio, Virginia Garretón. El martes 10, el Premio Nobel estará en la Universidad de Concepción a las 15:15 horas, en el Auditorio Salvador Gálvez de la Facultad de Ingeniería (inscripciones phernandezj@udec.cl), mientras que el miércoles 11 dictará dos conferencias: la primera a las 11:30 horas el Auditorio de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Valparaíso; y por la tarde, a las 16:30, estará en el Salón de Honor de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
