[:en]The lecture delivered by Dr, Guido Garay, Director of the Astronomy Department of Universidad de Chile, was an open event held last Wednesday, July 29th in the main auditorium of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, and had a video support – created by Garay himself – in which he showed how and where the stars are formed.
The activity showed dozens of images of the Universe obtained by the observations from some of the most powerful telescopes created by the human being, for example: ALMA, the largest radiostronomy instrument in the world. “This is a terrific instrument that is literally widening the new horizons in terms of human knowledge. This is just the beginning,” he stated.
The presentation did a historical overview about the discoveries that helped to reveal the star formation process. The professor also highlighted the amazing conditions of the Chilean skies to the development of the Cosmos investigation. “We are a privileged country because our north has the skies with the best conditions to correctly develop our science, that is why the main astronomical centers of the world are located in Chile.”
Additionally, the researcher presented a video- created by himself – where through full-color animations he literally transported the audience to places as far away as the Orion Nebula, the short also showed the fascinating process of ejecting gas and dust jets, which occur in the process of star formation.

El evento, abierto a todo púbico, se realizó el pasado miércoles 29 de julio en el auditorio principal de la Academia de Chilena de Ciencias. La sesión dictada por el Doctor Guido Garay, Director del Departamento de Astronomía de la U. de Chile, contó además con un audiovisual -creado por el mismo científico- donde se mostraba cómo y el dónde se forman las estrellas.
La exposición mostró decenas de imágenes del universo obtenidas gracias a las observaciones de algunos de los telescopios más poderosos creados por nuestra especie, como por ejemplo: ALMA, el arreglo de radioastronomía más grande del planeta. “Es un instrumento formidable que está literalmente abriendo las nuevas fronteras del conocimiento humano. Esto está recién comenzando”, explicó.
La ponencia hizo un recorrido histórico acerca de los descubrimientos que llevaron a develar el proceso de formación de las estrellas. El académico además hizo hincapié acerca de las extraordinarias condiciones de los cielos chilenos para el desarrollo de la investigación del cosmos. “Somos un país privilegiado, ya que el norte de Chile posee los cielos con las mejores condiciones para desarrollar nuestra ciencia, es por ello que los principales centros astronómicos del mundo están instalados en nuestro país”.
Adicionalmente, el científico presentó un audiovisual -creado por él mismo – donde mediante animaciones a todo color literalmente transportó a la audiencia hacia lugares tan distantes como la Nebulosa de Orión, el corto también mostró el fascinante proceso de la eyección de jets de gas y polvo, que se producen en el proceso de formación estelar.

Esta ponencia se enmarcó en el ciclo de charlas científicas: “Miércoles en la Academia. Festival de Astronomía”, esfuerzo que une a la Academia Chilena de Ciencias, el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica y el Centro de Excelencia en Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines CATA.
