[:en]MAS RESEARCHERS GO ON A METEORITE-HUNTING EXPEDITION[:es]Investigadores MAS participan en expedición en búsqueda de meteoritos [:]

[:en]Led by Millarca Valenzuela, Chilean Geologist, and Jérôme Gattacceca, French Geologist, MAS Associate Researchers Alejandro Clocchiatti and Dante Minniti, also joined by Joyce Pullen –part of the scientific team–, went on a meteorite-hunting expedition in the middle of the Atacama Desert to determine the impact parameters of a large object that collided around 8 millions of years ago.

Because of the enormous energy released when the meteorite impacts the Earth’s crust, silicates on the ground melt and the shock wave scatters them in the air, these later cool down and tektites are formed, which show the magnitude of the collision. This expedition monitored the impact’s structure over an area of 20km2 and, if this distribution map is confirmed and this material density match indeed the one of a meteorite, this area would become the 6th tektites field known in the world and the first in South America.

One of Millarca Valenzuela’s goals is to protect these geological sites; meteorites and rocks; for this reason the place visited in the expedition will be kept confidential.

Meteorites are the oldest rocks of the Solar System and they carry information about the Earth origins, reason why it is an interdisciplinary team of astronomers, geologists, biologists and physicists who study them so they can reconstruct the Earth’s journey from the beginning until it could support life.

After the expedition, scientists will carry out different studies with the samples found in order to complete our knowledge about the process of formation of this material and about the consequences in our habitat after this kind of impacts. Also, once classified, they will determine the origin of meteorites and its composition will contribute to our knowledge about the first objects of the Solar System.

Photos: Joyce Pullen[:es]Liderados por la geóloga chilena Millarca Valenzuela y el geólogo francés Jérôme Gattacceca, los investigadores asociados del MAS Alejandro Clocchiatti y Dante Minniti, además de Joyce Pullen, miembro de su equipo científico, participaron en una expedición en pleno desierto de Atacama en la búsqueda de meteoritos, con el objetivo de determinar los parámetros de impacto de una gran objeto producido alrededor de unos ocho millones de años.

Por la enorme energía con que el meteorito impacta la corteza terrestre, los silicatos del lugar se funden y la onda expansiva los dispersa, en el aire se enfrían y se forman las tektitas, que evidencian la magnitud de la colisión. La expedición monitoreó la estructura de este impacto en un área de unos 20 km² y, de confirmarse que el mapa de distribución y densidad de este material corresponde efectivamente a un meteorito, sería el 6º campo de tektitas reconocido en el mundo y el primero en Sudamérica.

Entre los objetivos del trabajo de Millarca Valenzuela está el de lograr la protección de estos sitios geológicos y de los meteoritos y rocas, por esta razón es que el lugar de la expedición se mantiene en reserva.

Los meteoritos, las rocas más antiguas del Sistema Solar, contienen información sobre los orígenes de la Tierra, por lo que son materia de estudio interdisciplinario entre astrónomos, geólogos, biólogos y físicos, quienes intentan reconstruir el camino que recorrió nuestro planeta hasta poder albergar vida.

Terminada la expedición, los científicos realizarán diversos estudios sobre las muestras encontradas y con los resultados se espera completar el conocimiento sobre el proceso de formación de este material y sobre las consecuencias en nuestro hábitat de este tipo de impactos. Además, una vez clasificados los meteoritos, se podrá determinar su origen y su composición aportará al conocimiento sobre los primeros objetos del Sistema Solar.
