[:en]Astronomer Dante Minniti described his recent appointment as President of the “Local Universe” Commission of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a great honor and recognition.
The researcher of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics and director of the Ph.D. in Astrophysics Program of Universidad Andrés Bello will take over this position to lead the promotion and management of international collaboration opportunities in this area of astronomy. Minniti will also have to lead the coordination of the committee –made up of six members from all over the world–, the evaluation and selection of international congresses, reports, nomenclature, definitions, among other responsibilities.
The “Local Universe” Commission was created in 2015 as an extension of the “Structure and Dynamics of the Galactic System” Commission’s role, but with a broader scope, in order to address multiple bands of observation. In this way, it now focuses on the study of the Milky Way and neighbor galaxies. In addition, one of its main goals is to use this near laboratory to study the formation of galaxies in different environments and with different masses.
Source: UNAB[:es]Como un gran honor y reconocimiento calificó el astrónomo Dante Minniti su reciente nombramiento como presidente de la Comisión “Universo Local” en la Unión Astronómica Internacional (IAU por sus siglas en inglés).
El trabajo, de quien es investigador del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica, además de director del Doctorado en Astrofísica de la Universidad Andrés Bello, consistirá en promover y gestionar instancia de colaboración internacional de esta área de la astronomía, incluyendo la coordinación del comité compuesto por seis miembros de todo el mundo, la evaluación y selección de congresos internacionales, reportes, nomenclatura, definiciones, entre otras labores.
La Comisión “Universo Local” nació en 2015, continuando las funciones realizadas en la de “Estructura y dinámica del Sistema Galáctico”, pero con un rango más amplio, abordando múltiples bandas de observación. De esta forma, ahora se enfoca en el estudio de la Vía Láctea y de las galaxias vecinas. Además, uno de sus principales objetivos es usar este laboratorio cercano para estudiar la formación de galaxias en diferentes ambientes y con distintas masas.
