The 2019 IEEE CIS Meritorious Service Award was presented by the Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Pablo Estévez, civil electrical engineer, professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering -DIE- and associate researcher at the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, was recognized for his leadership, achievements and dedication, in addition to developing a strategic plan for the future of the IEEE CIS.
In this context, Professor Estévez comments: “It is a world recognition by my peers to highlight my career and contribution to the IEEE CIS. The decision on this award was taken by an IEEE committee at the meeting held in Brazil, prior to the World Congress on Computer Intelligence, which took place in July of this year.
He adds, “It is also an honor for the organization that I belong to, because I am part of the Electrical Engineering Department and the FCFM, who supported me and gave me the time to develop and carry out voluntary activities that involve publications, conferences, seminars, workshops, talks, educational activities, techniques, etc.”
Pablo Estévez graduated as Civil Electrical Engineer from Universidad de Chile in 1981 and obtained his Master and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He is currently Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering DIE of Universidad de Chile, where he was Director from 2006 to 2010.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and former President of the Computer Intelligence Society of the IEEE, between 2016-2017 and current Past President of the same organization. Recently, he was also co-chairman of the World Congress on Computational Intelligence, IEEE WCCI 2018, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2018 with the participation of more than 1,500 attendees, including several academics and students from the Electrical Engineering Department and the FCFM.
About the IEEE
IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers – is an international non-profit organization, created in 1882, whose objective is to promote and spread knowledge of electricity, electronics, computing, industrial engineering, etc. The IEEE has about 400,000 members and is organized geographically into 10 regions, Region 9 being Latin America. Chile has a section. Large countries like Brazil and Mexico have more than 5 sections. The IEEE’s section in Chile was established in 1962 and is one of the oldest in Latin America where the chapter of the Computational Intelligence Society -CIS- exists since 2003.

El premio “2019 IEEE CIS Meritorious Service Award”, fue otorgado por la Sociedad de Inteligencia Computacional (Computational Intelligence Society) -CIS- del Instituto de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos –IEEE-.
El ingeniero civil electricista, académico del Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica –DIE- e investigador asociado del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS, Pablo Estévez, fue reconocido por su liderazgo, logros y dedicación, además de desarrollar un plan estratégico para el futuro del IEEE CIS.
Al respecto, el profesor Estévez menciona. “Es un reconocimiento mundial por parte de mis pares donde destacan mi trayectoria y aporte a la IEEE CIS. La decisión sobre este galardón la tomó un comité de la IEEE, en la reunión que se realizó en Brasil, previo al Congreso Mundial de Inteligencia Computacional, que se desarrolló en el mes de julio de este año”.
Agrega, “También, es una distinción a la organización que uno pertenece, porque soy parte del Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica y de la FCFM, quienes me apoyaron y dieron el tiempo para poder desenvolverme y llevar a cabo actividades voluntarias que involucran publicaciones, congresos, seminarios, talleres, charlas, actividades educativas, técnicas, etc.”
Pablo Estévez se tituló de Ingeniero Civil Electricista de la Universidad de Chile en 1981, y obtuvo sus grados de magíster y doctorado en la Universidad de Tokio, Japón en los años 1992 y 1995, respectivamente. Actualmente es profesor titular en el Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica –DIE- de la Universidad de Chile, donde ejerció el cargo de director entre los años 2006 y 2010.
Es miembro en el grado de Fellow del Instituto de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos –IEEE-, y ex presidente de la Sociedad de Inteligencia Computacional del IEEE, durante el período 2016-2017 y actual past president de la misma organización. Además fue recientemente co-presidente general del Congreso Mundial sobre Inteligencia Computacional, IEEE WCCI 2018, que se llevó a cabo en Río de Janeiro, Brasil, en el mes de julio de 2018 con la participación de más de 1500 asistentes, entre ellos varios académicos y alumnos del Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica y de la FCFM.
Acerca de la IEEE
IEEE -Instituto de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos- es una organización internacional sin fines de lucro, creada en 1882, cuyo objetivo es promover y difundir el conocimiento de la electricidad, la electrónica, la informática, la ingeniería industrial, etc. El IEEE tiene alrededor de 400,000 miembros y está organizado geográficamente en 10 regiones, la Región 9 es América Latina.
