The Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, the Millennium Nucleus for Planet Formation NPF and the Physics and Astronomy of Universidad de Valparaíso joined to carry out different activities in the III region, which will be conducted the next July 2, 2019. Besides, there also will be some previous talks in near areas to motivate the population to understand better this phenomenon.
The next July 2019, the world will keep an eye on our country because we will be privileged to behold a total solar eclipse in two of our regions (III and IV), which will be partial in the rest of our country. This is a unique opportunity to keep showcasing the role that Chile is playing in astronomy around the world, especially in the citizens of these regions so near to the greatest observatories.
Therefore, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, the Millennium Nucleus for Planet Formation NPF, and the Institute of Physics and Astronomy of Universidad de Valparaíso joined together to carry out the so-called event “La Gran Fiesta del Eclipse en la III region” (“The big Eclipse Celebration in the III region”), which will be possible thanks to the shared financing of Comité Mixto ESO-Gobierno de Chile that will hold different activities focused on the Sun in Cachiyuyo and Incahuasi towns, where the eclipse will be total, and also in Vallenar, Alto del Carmen and Domeyko, where it will be partial.
Particularly, the day of the eclipse in the path of totality, an event of solar observations will be carried out, in which at least 20 astronomers from the three institutions involved will participate in this activity. They also will hold different activities in both towns in parallel with solar telescopes, workshops to know more about the Sun and how to safely watch it, a children’s area, astronomical games, so that, the attendees can learn about several astronomical concepts through trivias and prizes, and indeed, the eclipse observation wearing special glasses provided to the attendees that day.
Weeks before the event, in the near eclipse areas -Vallenar, Alto del Carmen and Domeyko- some talks will be given to high-school students and to the general audience with the aim to encourage the population to get ready for this great astronomical event that the region will experience and to come to the path of totality on July 2 or just enjoy the eclipse safely in their cities.
Likewise, the three institutions involved are already carrying out activities to teach and encourage the citizens to experience the eclipse. Currently, there were designated spaces in astronomical fairs in late 2018 and also will be in the Astronomy Day celebration in 2019. The main idea is that not only that the III region gets motivated by this phenomenon, but also turn this in a big celebration to our country.

El Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS, el Núcleo Milenio de Formación Planetaria y el Instituto de Física y Astronomía de la Universidad de Valparaíso se unieron para realizar diversas actividades en la zona de totalidad de la III región del eclipse que tendrá lugar el próximo 2 de julio de 2019. Además, se realizarán algunas charlas previas en localidades cercanas para incentivar a la población a entender este fenómeno.
El próximo julio de 2019, nuestro país estará bajo la mirada del mundo entero, por tener el privilegio de presenciar en dos de sus regiones (tercera y cuarta) un eclipse total de Sol, el cual se verá de forma parcial en el resto del territorio nacional. Una oportunidad única que permite seguir poniendo en valor el papel que juega Chile en la astronomía del mundo, sobre todo en la ciudadanía de estas regiones tan cercanas a los grandes observatorios.
Es por eso que el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS, el Núcleo Milenio de Formación Planetaria y el Instituto de Física y Astronomía de la Universidad de Valparaíso se unieron para realizar lo que llamaron “la Gran Fiesta del Eclipse en la III región”, evento que gracias en parte al financiamiento del Comité Mixto ESO-Gobierno de Chile llevará diversas actividades centradas en el Sol a la zona de Cachiyuyo e Incahuasi, donde el eclipse se observará en forma total, pero también a zonas aledañas como Vallenar, Alto del Carmen y Domeyko, donde se verá de forma parcial.
Particularmente, en la zona de totalidad, el día del eclipse, se montará un evento de observación solar, que contará con la presencia de unos 20 astrónomos de las tres instituciones involucradas, quienes en ambas localidades de forma paralela realizarán observaciones con telescopios solares, talleres para conocer acerca de este astro y la forma segura de observarlo, zona para niños, concursos astronómicos para que a través de trivias y premios los asistentes aprendan sobre distintos conceptos de astronomía y por supuesto observación del eclipse con lentes especiales los que serán provistos a los asistentes.
En las zonas cercanas al eclipse – Vallenar, Alto del Carmen y Domeyko- se realizarán charlas para estudiantes en colegios y público general semanas antes del evento. Todo ello, con la finalidad de que la población comience a prepararse para el gran evento astronómico que vivirá la región y pueda acercarse a las zonas de totalidad el 2 de julio, o bien disfrute del eclipse de forma segura en sus respectivas ciudades.
Asimismo, desde ya, las tres instituciones están realizando actividades para enseñar e incentivar a la población a vivir el eclipse. Ya se dedicaron espacios en ferias científicas a fines de 2018 y lo mismo se hará para celebrar el Día de la Astronomía 2019. La idea es que no sólo la III región se incentive con este fenómeno, sino que sea una fiesta que disfrute todo el país.
