For the fourth year in a row, students from elementary and high school were called to take part in the Asteroid Day Short-Story Contest 2019 that the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS carries out.

Every year, this contest is held on the International Asteroid Day, a worldwide celebration in which MAS is the local coordinator which also invites to institutions from all over the globe to carry out outreach activities about to raise awareness about these objects and the importance of study them.

This story contest seeks that students imagine stories about asteroids, that in past years had more than 200 stories at the end of the date. The stories should be written in no more than 111 words since this year the 35-meter asteroid collision turns 111 years, which happened in the Russian region of Tunguska, destroying an area of over 2000 km2, commemorating the Asteroid Day every June 30.

The winners of both the Elementary school category (3rd to 8th grade) and the High School category (1st to 4th grade) could win an UpClose binocular by Celestron (10×50) to begin with their first astronomical observations. The jury, formed by the “Bruno and the Big Bang” co-author, Carolina Undurraga; the geologists and MAS researcher, Millarca Valenzuela; and the PhD. in Astrophysics and MAS-UC researcher, Alejandro Clochiatti, will choose the winner.

Estudiantes de Enseñanza Básica y Media son convocados por cuarto año al Concurso de Relatos Breves Día del Asteroide 2019, organizado por el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS.

Este concurso se realiza cada año en el marco del Día Internacional del Asteroide, celebración mundial del que el MAS es coordinador regional, y que invita a instituciones de todo el mundo a realizar actividades de divulgación científica en torno a estos objetos estelares para poner conciencia sobre ellos y en la necesidad de estudiarlos.

Este concurso de cuentos busca que los estudiantes imaginen historias en torno a los asteroides, lo que años anteriores terminó con más de 200 relatos recibidos. El objetivo es que los cuentos no superen las 111 palabras, ya que este año se cumplen esa cantidad de años desde la colisión de un asteroide, de unos 35 metros de diámetro, en la remota región rusa de Tunguska arrasando con una superficie de más de 2.000 km2 y que cada 30 de junio conmemora el Asteroid Day.

Los ganadores de las categorías Básica (3ro a 8vo básico) y Media (1ero a 4to Medio) podrán ganar un binocular UpClose de Celestron (10×50) o similar para comenzar con sus primeras observaciones astronómicas y serán elegidos por un jurado formado por la coautora del libro Bruno y el Big Bang, Carolina Undurraga; la geóloga e investigadora del MAS Millarca Valenzuela y el Doctor en Astrofísica, investigador del MAS y del Instituto de Astrofísica UC, Alejandro Clocchiatti.
